San
Diego Museum - There is no shortage of museums
in San Diego. They run the gamut from nature, railroads,
military, art, space and the well preserved. It is
guaranteed there is a museum somewhere in the city
that will satisfy you.
Most of the city’s museums are located in Balboa
Park, which is just minutes from downtown.
All the museums in the park are worth a visit, but
the more popular ones are the Natural History Museum,
Museum of Man, Museum of Art, the
Railroad Museum, and the Aerospace Museum. Every Tuesday
select museums offer free admission so bring the kids
and make a day of it!
But don’t limit yourself to Balboa Park. Old
Town has a wonderful Sheriff’s Museum
with displays of old guns, badges, uniforms, and other
Wild West memorabilia. While there also visit the
Serra House. This mission-style building was built
in 1929 to commemorate the site where the first mission
was established. The museum showcases various artifacts
such as clothing, furniture, tools and housewares.
Downtown
has several museums as well. The Midway Museum
offers self-guided audio tours of America’s
longest serving aircraft carrier. The William Heath
Davis House built in 1850 is the oldest structure
in San Diego. The Firehouse Museum
has a large collection of fire-fighting equipment
from around the world. And just 30 minutes north of
downtown is Carlsbad, home of the Museum of Making
Music.
Your options are limitless. If you plan on visiting
more than one museum set aside at least one or even
two full days to be able to spend enough time at each
place to fully appreciate it. Most Museums
in San Diego are located within only a few
minutes of one another so getting to the next museum
isn’t a problem.
